SACC publishes open letter on Scotland’s alcohol deaths statistics

We have recently published an open letter in response to the release of Scotland’s 2024 alcohol-specific deaths statistics by National Records of Scotland.

While any reduction in alcohol-specific deaths is welcome, alcohol remains one of Scotland’s most serious public health challenges, with harm falling most heavily on people living in the most deprived communities. Too often, the full impact of alcohol is underestimated, particularly its role in wider health conditions and its growing overlap with drug-related deaths.

In our letter, we call for alcohol to be given the priority it demands within national policy. We set out the case for a standalone national alcohol strategy, greater investment in prevention, treatment and support services, action to address health inequalities, and stronger regulation of alcohol marketing and availability.

We urge national leaders to act with urgency and clarity to prevent further loss of life.
